No War Factory

No War Factory was born in Ban Naphia, a village in Xiengkhouang province, Laos, on the Plain of Jars. Laos is the most bombed country in history by population. Some of the dropped devices never exploded and are still in the fields, where the families live and work today. Demining operations coordinated with UXOLAO recover that metal and bring it back to the village. There Mr. Phet and his wife Thone cast it by hand. The technique is sand casting: a beaten earth mold, the metal poured, the piece extracted and finished by hand, one at a time. No industrial mold. No two pieces are identical to the previous ones. The result is a bracelet, a necklace, a pair of earrings. An instrument of war that no longer exists. Alongside the Laos line, No War Factory distributes a line of handicrafts made in Thailand — waxed cords, semi-precious stones, and beadwork. The two lines remain distinct and are indicated as such on each product sheet. A portion of the proceeds supports demining work and access to drinking water on the Plain of Jars.
